- Updates from Our Students and Staff
By Deborah L. Huntley, Preservation Archaeologist

I thought I’d share a series of updates about what some of our former Mule Creek field school students and staff members have been doing lately. Here is the first installment:
From Jake Mitchell (2011 Field School, Hendrix College): “In October I started working for a CRM firm called Panamerican Consultants. For four months, I worked in Arkansas doing Phase 2 testing and excavation; data recovery in the river valley for a proposed shipping facility on the Arkansas River. I am now in Louisiana doing survey in Kisatche National Forest. The joy of contract Archaeology is that I have no idea what’s next! Archaeology in the South is very different than the Southwest, in content and in practice, but I am thankful for my experience in Mule Creek.”

From Kelsey Shaw (2011 Field School, Grand Valley State University): “I’m working with our university’s faunal remains specialist, who is building a comparative collection of animal remains. I’m doing most of the dirty work in the wet lab, processing the animals, and cataloging the skeletons. It’s messy work, but it’s fascinating.”

Will Ferguson (2011 Field School, University of Texas San Antonio). The winner of the 2010 field school’s sandal-making competition tells us: “I just graduated from UTSA and now I am in the process of looking for a job to start the next chapter of life. I have been sending my resume into all sorts of jobs, including land man for oil companies, land and oil well survey, and some environmental field work.”
|
From Emily Polansky (2011 Field School, Rutgers University): “I am finishing up my final semester at Rutgers University. This year I have been working on completing my geology minor and have taken courses in sedimentology, stratigraphy, and microstratigraphic analysis in archaeology. I hope that all of these courses will help me later. I am taking Anthropology of Native North America and hope to learn more about modern Native American groups. I am also applying for archaeology field internships and museum internships.”
