Archaeology Southwest Acquires a Portion of Quail Point Rock Art Complex
Protection of millennia-old rock art in the Gila Bend region of Arizona was strengthened in June 2014 when Archaeology Southwest acquired a 360-acre parcel that includes a large portion of Quail Point, an impressive rock art site within the proposed Great Bend of the Gila National Monument. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administers the other portion. Through our ownership of the parcel—which comprises a significant cluster of rock art, segments of ancient trails, and part of a seasonal camp inhabited by people of the Patayan culture about a thousand years ago—we will routinely monitor conditions of the archaeological resources on the parcel and provide research and educational access aligned with our conservation goals. http://bit.ly/1r1UZpz – Archaeology Southwest
Patrica Crown Discusses Election to the National Academy of Sciences
Anthropology professor Patricia Crown has enjoyed numerous accomplishments and recognitions in the field of archaeology, and uses her passion for the field to instruct her students. One of Crown’s more recent accomplishments is her election to membership in the National Academy of Sciences as one of its 2013-2014 inductees, she said. The call was unexpected – and early. “They called me at seven in the morning, and their tradition is that everybody in the anthropology section of the Academy lines up and talks to you on the phone and congratulates you,” Crown said. http://bit.ly/UZ0t7m – New Mexico Daily Lobo
Educational Curriculum Development at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument
In an office behind the bookstore at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, a small group of strangers are working together to create something that could bring a great deal of excitement for many young people, not to mention for those in charge of educating them. In an effort to offer a more engaging and accommodating experience for school classes coming to the Ruins, Park Ranger Diane Garcia decided to bring in teachers from around the area to develop a curriculum that will not only provide an entertaining experience for the kids but also will benefit the educational goals of the teachers. http://bit.ly/UYWtUv – Tri-Valley Dispatch
Comments on Proposed Hydraulic Fracturing of the Chacoan Landscape
In a letter dated May 27, 2014, Archaeology Southwest provided comments to the Farmington Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The BLM had solicited comments from concerned parties as it prepared to revisit and amend its Resource Management Plan (RMP) for the Mancos-Gallup District in light of renewed oil and gas exploration in the region. When the BLM completed the RMP in 2003, experts presumed that oil and gas resources were exhausted and that extraction would cease. Now, new technologies (sometimes referred to as “fracking”) are making it possible to continue to extract oil and gas from the Mancos Shale layer. The substantial increase in actual and expected exploration poses clear threats to the Chacoan cultural landscape of northwestern New Mexico. http://bit.ly/1z0vNm0 – Archaeology Southwest
Musician Phil Collins Donates Extensive Collection to Alamo Museum
He said his interest in collecting began in the mid-’80s while in Washington, D.C. on tour with Genesis — he was walking through a collectables shop and found a letter written by Davy Crockett: “I was stunned that this was actually his handwriting and that this letter was written by him… Through serendipity I kind of came in contact with a few things and started collecting, and before long I was spending money that I made from music. Some people would buy Ferraris, some people would buy houses, I bought old bits of metal and old bits of paper. And before long I had this very large collection.” http://go.spin.com/1vlbDyn – Spin
25 Incan Quipus Found in Peru
A set of twenty-five well-preserved quipus were found in the archaeological complex of Incahuasi, south of Lima, Alejandro Chu, archaeologist in charge of the site reported on Tuesday. Chu told Andina News Agency that this is a major finding, as the quipus were found in warehouses or kallancas and not in a funerary context, as most discoveries in the past, “what makes us believe they were used for administrative purposes”. http://bit.ly/1q4LMLr – Peru Today
