- Pottery Workshop with Andy Ward
The field school students and some of the staff took part in a pottery workshop on the afternoon of the 31st. Potter Andy Ward presented the workshop. He brought out two buckets of prepared clay for the students and staff to try their hands at making coil-and-scrape pottery.
The clay was from east of Tucson in the Vail area, and it will make nice red ware pots. Andy gave each student a large lump of clay, and then he taught the group how to coil it up into small vessels. They worked on their pots all afternoon, and even got them to a nice polished stage by day’s end. At some point, we will paint them prior the firing on July 4.
Many thanks to Andy for his generosity in sharing his clay and instruction. The pots look great, and we look forward to finishing them up and seeing the final, fired products.
