- Time to Step up to Protect Chaco!
(February 8, 2022)—In November 2021, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland announced the withdrawal of 351,000 acres of Federal surface land from oil-gas development in a 10-mile zone around Chaco Culture National Historical Park.
As our supporters know, we at Archaeology Southwest have advocated for the establishment of the 10-mile protection zone around Chaco for more than five years. We applaud this very important decision.
As part of the withdrawal process, a 90-day review and comment period began in early January 2022. This period ends on May 6.
We have prepared a two-page primer on the 10-mile zone and why it matters so much. This document may help you draft your comments.
So, now is the time to step up and provide written comments to Secretary Haaland and the BLM to get this land withdrawal in place!
There are several ways to submit comments.

Or, written comments can be emailed to the following address:

So your telling me that the Navajo Nation is not protecting their own land? And what I don’t understand is writhing Chaco your not allowed to walk off trail including historical roads that are already laid out, ji agree with protection all that land is Navajo nation I would think they would be willing to protect their own land against oil and gas
