– 2007 Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month Planning: On August 24, 2006, 21 people from different organizations around Arizona met at the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to kick off planning for the upcoming celebration of Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month (AAHAM) slated for March 2007. The planning group came up with “Reconnect with the Past” as the theme to help guide planning for the month and for the Arizona Archaeology Expo (Expo). The Expo will be hosted by Yuma Crossing State Historic Park in Yuma and will be on March 16-17, 2007 (Friday and Saturday). Friday will feature a Kid’s Education Day for local elementary school classes, and Girl and Boy Scouts will be involved in special programming on Saturday. Both days will be open to the public and will be free. SHPO will be looking for Expo participants and hopes to see you all there! We need your help! – Key Rio Nuevo Project Finally Taking Shape: After years of delays, Rio Nuevo’s centerpiece project is finally starting to take shape. “Tucson Origins” would include a cultural plaza, museums, and a re-creation of the original early 1800’s San Agustin Mission.

– Position Announcement – NM 128 Archaeological Project: The Office of Archaeological Studies, Museum of New Mexico, will be conducting excavations of eight sites along NM Highway 128 east of Loving, New Mexico. The excavations will probably begin no earlier than late September 2006 and will continue into the spring. We will be fielding at least four crews, and we will be hiring at all levels (crew member, assistant crew chief, and project/field director). The three separate position levels are advertised on the New Mexico State Personnel Office (NMSPO) web site as Basic, Operational, and Advanced levels within the Anthropologist-Archaeologist category. Interested parties will find the formal announcements among the list of state positions posted at http://www.state.nm.us/spo/. NMSPO rules specify that educational and experience requirements listed in on-line job postings must describe fully qualified candidates rather than entry level qualifications for the job classes. Minimum qualifications for the three positions are approximately 1/4 of listed qualifications for the Basic category and 1/2 of the listed qualifications for the Operational and Advanced categories. Applications must be submitted electronically through the NMSPO web site, but copies of resumes must also be submitted electronically or on paper to Eric Blinman, Office of Archaeological Studies, PO Box 2087, Santa Fe, NM 87504-2087 (eric.blinman@state.nm.us).
