– Arizona Archaeological Council to Award Peter Pilles: On Saturday, November 4th, during the Arizona Archaeological Council Prescott Conference, to be held in Prescott, Arizona on November 3-4, 2006. AAS will make a presentation: Peter J. Pilles, Jr., Forest Archaeologist Coconino National Forest, will be awarded the 1st Annual AAS Professional Archaeologist Award. This award will honor Peter for his consistent contribution of time and expertise to the AAS, and to avocational archaeology. AAS will also present a memoriam for Dr. Alfred E. Dittert, Jr., an early contributor and longtime advocate for AAS and avocational archaeology.

– Maricopa County Seeking Public Comment on Gillespie Dam-Bridge Rehab: MCDOT looking for public input about Rehabilitation Project for historic Gillespie Dam Bridge (Old US 80 at the Gila River). The Maricopa County Department of Transportation Right Roads Program is conducting an open house public meeting to gather input about conceptual design plans for the rehabilitation of the Old US 80 Bridge over the Gila River (Gillespie Dam Bridge) and proposed bridge and adjacent roadway improvements to address forecasted area development. 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 23, 2006 Gila Bend Elementary School Cafeteria, 308 W. – Graduate Student Grant Opportunity at Joshua Tree National Park: Joshua Tree National Park and the Joshua Tree National Park Association are happy to announce a new graduate student research grant opportunity. This program is designed to encourage students to conduct research, provide experience in applying for grants, meeting deadlines, and developing and managing a budget. The student’s work should focus on the resources of Joshua Tree National Park. Graduate students in the following disciplines are encouraged to apply: botany, historic structures, wildlife studies, desert ecology, museum studies, oral history, physical and earth sciences, archaeology, cultural landscape studies, park and community history, information management for resources, paleontology and ethnography. Multiple disciplines are invited and multiple awards will be made.
