– Historic Preservation Blog Service Launched: We are thrilled to announce that the newest feature on PreservationDirectory.com the “Preservation Blog” – has officially launched. The Preservation Blog serves as a collection of “mini-blogs” that present articles and news items in a wide variety of topics under the umbrella of historic and cultural resource preservation. Our aim is to build a public repository of articles/notices/press releases on a wide variety of topics of value to the preservation community, including restoration techniques, the historic nomination process, museum exhibitions and news, preservation legislation, historic travel and heritage trip ideas, and endangered or threatened historic sites and homes.

– Historical Perspectives on the Art of Survey: It is not known when the state’s earliest surveys were performed. The Anasazi native people in nearby New Mexico engaged in a rather sophisticated type of surveying as early as 850 A.D. Substantial evidence exists among numerous ancient ruins in the Chaco Canyon area to confirm that particular alignments were made, ranged out, and replicated. The angular accuracy of their work using primitive methods was one or two minutes of arc.

Individual must have supervisory experience conducting survey on the Navajo Nation, Coconino, Kaibab, and Tonto National Forests, and must have expertise in identifying the full range of prehistoric ceramics found in northern Arizona. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and have completed a minimum of an M.A. in Anthropology. Individual must be familiar with completion of site forms, use of GPS, and capable of surveying in remote locations and over steep terrain for extended periods of time.
